| Un
village fleuri entre Touraine et Berry.
Veuil s’est développé
autour d’une antique fontaine et connut au XVIIème
et au XVIIIème siècle une industrie drapière
florissante : période de prospérité
qui vit se développer dans la paroisse une élite
intellectuelle, voire aristocratique où se côtoyaient
notaire royal, apothicaire, maîtres-drapiers et officiers
de la justice seigneuriale.
Veuil est actuellement un village dynamique où les
habitants participent activement à la vie locale,
aux nombreuses manifestations et, bien entendu, au fleurissement,
une vraie passion commune !
Près de 10 000 plants sont produits chaque année
et une équipe fidèle de bénévoles
prête la main à l’employée communale
pour planter, arroser, désherber les espaces verts
et les bacs et jardinières dispersés aux quatre
coins du bourg.
A floral village between
Touraine and Berry.
Veuil grew up round an ancient fountain, and had a flourishing
cloth manufacturing industry in the 17th and 18th centuries.
During this period of prosperity, an intellectual and even
aristocratic elite developed in the parish, bringing together
the royal notary, the apothecary, master drapers and the
lord’s officers of the law.
Veuil is now a dynamic village whose inhabitants take an
active part in local life with its many events, and, of
course, its floral displays, which are a true shared passion!
Some 10,000 plants are produced each year, and a loyal team
of well-wishers lends the local authority employee a hand
with planting, watering, and weeding the green areas and
the tubs and planters spread all round the village.

• De
la terre de Veuil, érigée en comté
en 1726, il ne reste, dominant le village que les ruines
romantiques de son Château Renaissance : seule sa
façade imposante et sa galerie à l’italienne
témoignent d’un riche passé.

built in the county in 1726, only the romantic ruins of
the Renaissance Château remain, overlooking the village:
only the imposing façade and Italian-style gallery
testify to a rich past.
• L’église Saint-Pierre (XIIème
siècle) fut agrandie au XVIème sièle
par adjonction de l’église préromane
primitive, d’où la forme étrange de
l’édifice. La scène de la Passion, en
réemploi sur la façade, daterait du Haut-Moyen
Age.
• The church of St. Peter
(12th century) was enlarged in the 16th century by the addition
of a primitive pre-Romanesque church, hence the strange
shape of the building. The scene of the Passion, reused
on the façade, is said to date from the Late Middle
Ages.
• La vieille fontaine, qui résonna longtemps
du rire des lavandières, connut au XVIIème
siècle une acticité drapière florissante
qui fit un temps la fortune de Veuil.
• The old fountain, which
long rang to the laughter of the washerwomen, was the centre
of a flourishing cloth-manufacturing business in the 17th
century which, for a time, made Veuil its fortune.
• Le four, datant du XVIIIèm siècle où
les habitants du hameau du Bas-Ray faisaient cuire les miches
de pain, la galette à la citrouille et le pâté
de Pâques traditionnels.
• The oven dating from the
18th century where the inhabitants of the hamlet of Le Bas-Ray
would bake their traditional rolls, pumpkin bread and Easter
pies.

centenaires.

(17th century) on the banks of the “La Rouère”
stream, offers the pleasure of a meal in the shade of century-old
chestnut trees.
• La commune de Veuil a su conserver des commerces
qui, outre leur fonction de services de proximité,
demeurent des lieux de rencontre et de convivialité
au cœur du village.

Veuil propose de nombreuses fêtes et animations, mais
il ne faut pas manquer la Journée de la Nature, le
dernier dimanche d’avril : randonnée pédestre,
exposition artisanale et artistique, produits régionaux
et biologiques, concert sur le parvis de l’église
drainent de toute la région des milliers de randonneurs
et de visiteurs vers un village fermé à toute
circulation automobile de 8h à 20h.
• Veuil has many festivals
and events, but one not to be missed is the Journée
de la Nature on the last Sunday of April: a walk, an arts
and crafts exhibition, regional and organic produce, and
a concert on the church square, bring thousands of walkers
and visitors from all round the region into a village from
which all vehicles are banned from 08.00 to 20.00. |
