| La ville
de Thouars a pris naissance sur un éperon rocheux
dans un méandre de la rivière du Thouet. Cette position
stratégique entre Anjou et Aquitaine en a fait très
tôt une place forte convoitée. En 762, Thouars est
mentionnée pour la première fois alors que Pépin
le Bref incendie la forteresse. La cité possède un
patrimoine historique important : un château imposant
construit en 1635 sur une ancienne forteresse médiévale
; l'église St Médard, bel édifice roman,
d'anciens quartiers avec de vieilles maisons du XVème siècle.
The town of Thouars first saw
the light of day on a rocky outcrop in a meander of the
Thouet river. This strategic position between Anjou and
Aquitaine very soon made it highly coveted. Thouars is first
mentioned in 762, when Pépin le Bref burnt down its fortress.
The site has an important historic background: an imposing
castle built in 1635 over an ancient medieval fortress;
the church of St. Médard, a fine romanesque building, old
quarters with old 15th Century houses. |
