A la lisière
de la forêt landaise et du piémont pyrénéen,
à 80 km de la mer et à 100 km des stations
de ski, Hagetmau bénéficie, sur le chemin
de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, d'une situation géographique
privilégiée. Dès le IVe siècle,
Girons, envoyé du pape Libere, serait parvenu sur
ce site préhistorique de peuplement et aurait converti
les populations, avant d’être martyrisé
vers 406 par les Vandales. Au VIIIème siècle,
une communauté de religieux édifie Saint Girons
de Hayet, une petite agglomération. L’histoire
du territoire de Hagetmau est ensuite jalonnée aux
XVe et XVI siècles par les hautes figures de Odet
d’Aydie, conseiller du roi Louis XI, de Françoise
de Châteaubriant, maîtresse de François
Ier et de Diane d’Andoins, la « belle Corisande
» maîtresse de Henri III de Navarre. Puis la
Révolution de 1848 éclaire le destin d’un
journaliste républicain, l’Hagetmautien Pascal
Duprat. Riche de cette histoire, Hagetmau s’appuie
depuis plus d’un siècle sur une industrie chaisière
performante. Le fleurissement de la ville rehausse ces atouts
économiques et patrimoniaux.
On the borders of the Landes forest
and Pyrenean Piedmont, 80 km from the sea and 100 km from
the ski resorts, Hagetmau, on the route to Santiago de Compostella,
benefits from a very special geographical situation. It
is said that in the 4th century, Girons, the envoy of Pope
Liberus, came to this prehistoric site and converted its
population before being martyred by the Vandals in around
406. In the 8th century, a community of monks built Saint
Girons de Hayet, a small village. The next significant event
in the history of the territory of Hagetmau is in the 15th
and 16th centuries with the advent of Odet d’Aydie,
counsellor to the King, Louis XI, Françoise de Châteaubriant,
the mistress of Francis I, and Diane d’Andoins, “La
Belle Corisande”, the mistress of Henry III of Navarre.
Then the 1848 Revolution sealed the fate of a Republican
journalist, Pascal Duprat, a native of Hagetmau. With this
fascinating history behind it, for more than century Hagetmau
has relied on a successful chair-making industry. The new
prosperity of this town has increased its advantages in
terms of economics and heritage. |

18h, sauf le mardi, en juillet et en août.
A jewel of Romanesque art, the crypt
of Saint Girons has fourteen magnificent capitals with a remarkable
diversity of themes and styles. If you would like to visit
