Une ville à l'urbanisme moderne, ponctuée de verdure et d'arbres, au bord d'un lac.
Créteil qui trouve son origine à la préhistoire, n'est pas complètement une ville nouvelle et se compose en réalité de trois quartiers : le village de Créteil, le Mont-Mesly et la ville nouvelle. Créteil conjugue avec bonheur un urbanisme original et moderne, témoignage de l'architecture des années 60-70, et une allure parfois campagnarde dans les anciens quartiers du bord de la Marne, dans un cadre de verdure et d'eau. Créteil a, en effet, su grandir en s'accompagnant d'un environnement végétal de qualité : le nombre d'arbres d'alignement est impressionnant. Peu de rues n'en possèdent pas.

Créteil goes back to prehistory, and is not altogether a new town. In reality, it consists of three districts: the village of Créteil, the Mont-Mesly and the new town. Créteil has a happy combination of original, modern town-planning, a testimony to the architecture of the '60s and '70s, and a sometimes countrified appearance in the old areas on the banks of the Marne, in a setting of greenery and water. In fact, Créteil has been able to grow while retaining a high-quality plant environment: the number of trees in rows is impressive. Few streets are without them.

La Marne se sépare en plusieurs bras et forme des îles très boisées. Un lacis de petites rues, parfois des sentiers, des passerelles permettent d'accéder aux îles (l'île des Ravageurs, l'île Sainte-Catherine, longée par le GR 14). Des panneaux rappellent aux promeneurs l'histoire des lieux, certains arbres remarquables sont identifiés. Des jardins familiaux rappellent que Créteil fut naguère une cité de maraîchers.
>In the village of Créteil, stroll along the banks of the Marne and you will feel as though you are in another time and place. The Marne splits into several arms, and forms heavily wooded islands. The islands (the Ile des Ravageurs, and the Ile Sainte-Catherine, bordered by the GR 14) can be reached through a network of little streets, sometimes paths, and footbridges. There are signs to remind walkers of the history of the town, and some of the more remarkable trees are identified. Family gardens are a reminder that Créteil was once a town of market-gardeners.

• Le lac d'une superficie de 42 hectares, bordé par 20 hectares d'espaces verts, au pied de l'Hôtel de Ville. On peut y faire de la voile, et ce superbe plan d'eau sert aussi de station aux oiseaux migrateurs .
>The lake, measuring 42 hectares, edged by 20 hectares of open spaces, outside the Hôtel de Ville. You can go sailing here, and this superb water feature is also a stopping-off point for migrating birds.
